Our History

A History of AMSPAR

The Association of Medical Secretaries, Practice Managers, Administrators and Receptionists (AMSPAR) has been a central part of the professional landscape for healthcare administrative staff in the United Kingdom for over half a century. Established in 1964, the organisation was originally created to support and represent medical secretaries working within a rapidly evolving healthcare system. At the time, administrative roles in healthcare were often under-recognised, despite being essential to the smooth running of services and the delivery of patient care.

In its early years, AMSPAR focused on building a sense of professional identity among medical secretaries. It provided opportunities for networking, shared learning, and the development of skills that were not formally recognised through structured qualifications. As the healthcare sector expanded—particularly with the continued development of the National Health Service—the need for trained and knowledgeable administrative staff became increasingly apparent. AMSPAR responded by broadening its scope and influence.

Over time, the organisation evolved to reflect the changing nature of healthcare administration. Its membership grew beyond medical secretaries to include receptionists, administrators, and practice managers, leading to the broader identity it holds today. This expansion recognised that effective healthcare delivery depends on a diverse team of non-clinical professionals working collaboratively across primary, secondary, and community care settings.

A significant milestone in AMSPAR’s development was its growing role in education and training. The organisation became known for offering nationally recognised qualifications designed to meet the practical needs of healthcare workplaces. These programmes helped standardise knowledge and skills across the profession, covering areas such as medical terminology, healthcare administration, and management. By promoting continuing professional development, AMSPAR contributed to raising standards and improving career progression opportunities for its members.

As AMSPAR matured, it also strengthened its position as a professional body and a registered charity. Its mission expanded beyond individual support to include the promotion of excellence in healthcare administration more broadly. This involved working with employers, educators, and sector partners to ensure that training remained relevant and aligned with the needs of modern healthcare services.

In recent years, AMSPAR has continued to adapt to changes within the healthcare environment, including advances in technology, evolving patient expectations, and the increasing complexity of service delivery. The organisation has embraced digital learning, updated its qualifications, and continued to advocate for the recognition and development of professional administrative roles.

Today, AMSPAR stands as a respected voice for healthcare administrative professionals. Its history reflects a consistent commitment to education, professional standards, and the recognition of the vital contribution made by non-clinical staff. From its origins supporting medical secretaries to its current role representing a wide range of healthcare professionals, AMSPAR has played an important part in shaping the profession and supporting those who work at the heart of healthcare administration.
